Dynamics NAV is now… (drum rolls) Dynamics 365 Business Central

We often hear about Dynamics 365, but what exactly is Dynamics 365? What role does Dynamics NAV play in the Dynamics 365 suite?

For some time now, Microsoft likes to change Dynamics 365 suite’s names. It is somewhat the same kind of principle with its star ERP: Navision, Dynamics NAV, Dynamics 365 Tenerife, Dynamics 365 for Sales & Operations – Business Edition and finally, the “final” REAL name: Dynamics 365 Business Central.

All these names are confusing us! One thing is sure, Microsoft’s marketing team is very busy dreaming up new names. Just joking.

The good news is that this wonderful solution, used by more than two million of users and 40000 clients, is more alive than ever.
Over the last few months, you may have heard of Dynamics 365, which represents several products, and are actually two ERP solutions:

  • Dynamics 365 for Sales & Operations – Enterprise Edition -> alias Dynamics AX -> alias Axapta (ERP Tier I for large companies)
  • Dynamics 365 Business Central -> it is basically the next Dynamics NAV version.

This announcement is very recent. We already know that there will be two offers: Essentials (all production and service modules) and Premium (with production and service).

Here are some Q & A related to this change:

Q: What are the major differences between Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics NAV?

R: Dynamics 365 Business Central is the natural evolution of Dynamics NAV (2018)’s latest version. It bears a new name, has a new fluid interface, as well as being a total Software as a Service -> SaaS new offer for those who are more familiar.

Q: What does the SaaS offer represent?

R: In SaaS mode, there is no more central server to manage solution updates, as you will always use the latest version. You know about Office365? O365 is actually a good old Exchange servers’ SaaS version. With O365, Office automatically updates in the background and all employees are using the same version. Dynamics 365 Business Central SaaS offer will be very similar to all of this. Some details will be confirmed shortly as the new solution’s price.

Q: Is there an on-premise offer (installation in house)?

R: An on-premise offer will be available; exact details will soon be confirmed.

Q: If my business currently uses Dynamics NAV, can I migrate to Dynamics 365 Business Central?

R: Absolutely! There will be a transition plan for NAV existing clients, exact details will soon be confirmed. Some elements will have to be considered, as partners’ products used add-ons and developments that will have to be migrated into extensions.

Q: What does ‘‘Extension Development’’ mean ?

R: Since the end of production of Dynamics NAV 2018 version, Microsoft strongly encourages partners to develop in extension 2.0 instead of directly modifying the source code as before. This new approach simplifies updates AND, most important, with Dynamics 365 Business Central, it is the only way to make modifications to the solution. Fortunately, Createch has vast expertise in extension development, especially at our Sault Ste. Marie business center.

Q: How can I learn more about this solution?

R: Right here. You can contact our Microsoft Dynamics experts. We will be glad to provide you with more details. You can also click here for more insights on the solution.
